We are on the second month of 2009, already! Is it going as fast for you as it is for me? I hope your year is moving forward as you hoped. It’s usually around this time that some of my New Year resolutions start fading.  My resolution success rate has never been too good. So I gave up making New Year resolutions some years back, and instead, I do reflections on and off during the year. Over the last couple of years I made a shift in my thinking as well and began to evaluate various areas of my life by how satisfied I am with them rather then how good (or bad) I’m doing.  While it is a small change in my thinking, I have found it very helpful. It helps me be more positive about my self.  Take exercise for instance.

Exercise is an area that people frequently set New Years resolution. Let me ask you. How do you feel about exercise? Is it something you do regularly? Do you struggle to meet your exercise goals?  Perhaps it was a New Year’s resolution. I want to tell you a little secret of how I am learning to incorporate exercise into my life more regularly and more enjoyably. For those of you who have exercise dialed in – stay tuned, you may be interested in the benefits of increased vitality, longevity, and sexual potency.

About 18 months ago I took my first Qigong (Chi Kung) course from Dr. Roger Jahnke, author of The Healer Within and The Healing Promise of Qi at the beautiful retreat center, Esalen in Big Sur, CA. With a wonderful diverse group of individuals we began learning the ancient healing practice and movements of Qigong.

One week allowed me to become a beginner’s beginner. Even so, in my unskilled practice I have found my body come alive with vital energy and renewed vigor that I haven’t had in a long time.  I can do it anywhere – my bedroom (even the shower), outdoors, in the park, before a speech – or really anywhere.  And surprisingly for me, afterwards, if I am in the right area,  I go for an enjoyable walk.

As I have grown with some of the movements and practices, I continually experience new benefits. I also like just being spontaneous with my own movements – which I’m told is OK. And with music in my ears from my iPod – I’m in heaven. Jahnke states that spontaneous Qigong is one of the best ways to shake out or detoxify stagnation or emotional patterns that are trapped inside.  The benefits are immediate and obvious.  www.feeltheqi.com

So what does this have to do with YOUR exercise? Well, I am into making life easy. Sometimes we get ourselves locked into what exercise needs to look like. We create big plans; perhaps join a gym or other regime only to find our best plans fall short. If that has been your experience, I would like to suggest that you try Qigong.  Surprise yourself. It may be just the ticket for you as it was for me.

For those of you who have a good pattern of exercise incorporated into your life, you may find QiGong a source for increasing vitality, longevity, and sexual potency; achieving and maintaining optimal health and inner peace; and healing both minor and major illnesses. You can’t go wrong there.

I have taken a few hiatuses, I am an imperfect beginner. But I have found a way that works for me and I simply wanted to share it with you. Explore, have fun, do something new.  Experience the healing power of Qi.

“Western medical studies show that the circulation boost for people who spend twenty minutes doing chi exercise is as effective as spending the same twenty minutes doing aerobic exercise." Bruce Frantzis

Also, A recent study traced 50 patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis for 12 weeks; half practiced Yang-style Tai Chi twice a week and half received advice on pain management.  The Tai Chi group experienced less pain and greater movement in physical function. Preliminary studies suggest that yoga may offer similar benefits.  Qigong, Tai Chi, Yoga are practices from the same root.

Nothing is really complete until we move it into action. I would like to challenge you to explore a different form of exercise over the next few weeks.  If you aren’t acquainted with Qigong, Tai Chi or Yoga, go to your local community parks & recreation and see what they are offering. If you have tried Yoga, try Tai Chi or Qigong.  Mix it up. Make it fun.  Treat your body, mind and spirit. For more information on Qigong go to:

And surprise for me! Writing this ezine creates more incentive for me to do my Qigong regularly! Let the movement begin! And remember, breathe deep.   Let me hear back on how Qigong has worked for you.

P.S.  I am so delighted to connect with each of you through this ezine.  This is a new challenge for me, but one I take on eagerly. I would enjoy hearing from you. Please give me your feedback and suggestions.

Testimony:

A year ago, last November; my life was at a "split in the road."  I was separated from my husband, I questioned the financial security of my work, I was almost 60 and I had no idea where I was going.  The support of the group, Marlene Lockwood's gentle but strong guidance and the weekly meetings became a touch stone of sanity for me.  The affirmation of "I am free to create my life in accordance with me spirit", became more than just words.  My life has changed completely.  Those meetings began a change in me that has not stopped.  I am so grateful.

Thank you, Marlene.

Love, Elizabeth
